At Playgroup WA, child safety, wellbeing, and empowerment is paramount to everything we do. Aligned with the National Principles for Child Safety and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Playgroup WA is committed to child safety, promoting child-safe principles and creating safe, supportive environments where every child is valued and can thrive.

We are dedicated to creating a safe and supportive environment for all children and their families. To further strengthen child-safe practices across Western Australia, we have co-created resources to help community playgroups and families better understand and respond to child safety concerns and promote abuse-prevention education.

For Parents/Carers and Playgroups

Protective Behaviour Activities:

Protective Behaviours is a personal safety program designed to empower children with the knowledge, skills, and strategies to identify and respond to unsafe situations in their everyday lives. Protective Behaviours can be taught from birth using simple, age-appropriate messages and fun, engaging activities—at home, in playgroups, and in early childhood settings. The approach is gentle and helps children build safety awareness in a positive way.

Here you will find a range of activities, books, songs, games, tips, and conversation starters to use at home or in playgroup. The activities provided are fun and engaging, providing gentle, age-appropriate messages, focused on building important life skills.

The Protective Behaviours program includes 10 topic areas, but some are more suited to older children. This resource focuses on key topics suitable for 0-5 year olds, laying a strong foundation for future learning.

Inclusive resources for children with disability or developmental delay:

Communication boards and social stories are a powerful tool to support not only children with disability or development delay, but all children. They give clear, concrete ways to express needs, feelings, and experiences — even when spoken language is hard. From a child-safe perspective, these tools are especially important because they empower children to communicate discomfort, set boundaries, and report concerns more easily and confidently.
